Weingut Hans Gsellmann
Austria, Burgenland
The contact to Weingut Hans Gsellmann is based on a coincidence. Flying from Europe to China by Austrian airlines I found sometimes a very interesting selection of several Austrian wines as a monthly specialty to the flight passengers. Once one of the Austrian wines had been Gsellmann`s Zweigelt Heideboden. I liked this wine immediately as a nice wine to accompany meal dishes with meat. So I contacted the winery and got over the 700 km distance from my home to the winery for a visit. I found very nice, polite and interesting people with a vision to change the traditional wine producing method to the strict biodynamic process.
Andreas Gsellmann, the well instructed and visionary young generation, has taken over the management of the winery since some years. Besides the interesting Zweigelts and Blaufränkisch, the local autochthonous red wine grapes, very nice sweet wines as “Auslese”, “Beerenauslese” and “Trockenbeerenauslese”, but also Eiswein are produced. Very interesting is also an Eiswein from red grapes, which can be offered in a second step. Already the “Auslese”, a sweet wine from selected grapes, is a sweet wine with, however, enough acidity to create a wide range of taste in the palate. Difficult to distinguish the Auslese from the much more known and expensive Eiswein. In fact the real surprise is the price- / quality relation.
Hans Gellmann is a very interesting winery with a huge potential , which will become one of the top players in the Burgenland. Thanks to Austrian Airlines, which had recognized its potential already time before myself.
